Movie: Jurassic Park(1993) – My opinion

You know that movie you really loved when you was younger and then you watch it now that you are older and it's not nearly as good as it was. Jurassic Park was one of my favorite movies growing up so it's time too see if it holds up.

During a preview tour of a theme park it suffers a power breakdown that allows is dinosaur exhibits to run free.

The creator of the park, John Hammond(played by Richard Attenborough who is known for his work on The Great Escape, Elizabeth, Rosebud), is a really well written character. You will probably think he's stupid at times but you got to remember that this park was his biggest creation. He also spared no expense as he says during the movie. You will see an character arc where he goes from not wanting to give up on the park to where he understand that he can't save it. He's also a grandfather which gives him a little more to be worried about when everything goes wrong since his grandchildren are in the park. His granddaughter Lex(played by Ariana Richards who is know for her work on Tremors, Space Invaders, Battledogs) is the oldest of his grandchildren. She's a computer-hacker(her words) or nerd(her brother Tims words). She's a good character, especially for a child/teen character. Her brother Tim(played by Joseph Mazzello who is known for his work on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Social Network, Star Kid) is really interested in dinosaurs and has read Dr. Grants book so you can say he's excited. Again, as a child character he's a very good character. A lot of child-characters have a tendency to become whiny or really annoying but that's not a problem in this movie and that really says something about how good the director(Steven Spielberg who is know for directing Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan) is or how good the script was. The children spend most of their time with Dr. Alan Grant(played by Sam Neill who is known for his work on The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, Escape Plan), who is a paleontologist and a fantastic character. His character arc is really good. He starts of as someone who doesn't like children very much but he really step up when the children in the park needs him and he even starts to kinda like them. Everything he explains never feel like its forced upon you or anything like that. A great character and a well written character. He has his girlfriend with him to the park, Dr. Ellie Sattler(played by Laura Dern who is known for her work on The Fault in Our Stars, 99 homes, When the Game Stands Tall), who is a paleobotanist. She has a little less of an character arc but she is a very very good character. She's a strong female character in a monster movie which is really good too see. They even mention the fact that shes a woman in there without making a huge discussion about it. A great strong female character and she's also very well written. With them on the tour of the park is also Dr. Ian Malcolm(played by Jeff Goldblum who is known for his work on Independence Day, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Fly), a mathematician and chaos theorist. This is also a great character. He's in some way the opposite of Dr. Grant and that's really great. You get more than one point of view on what they discuss and that's great for the audience. You either love him or hate him for the way he is and the way he talks and that is just one more thing that makes him a great character. With all these people its really hard to not find someone not to relate too. Most importantly, not one of the characters feels forced in there. Everyone has their place. All around great cast and great characters. You also get some really good supporting actors in Martin Ferrero(who is known for his work on Heat, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, Miami Vice(TV-Series)), Bob Peck(who is known for his work on Slipstream, The Opium War, The Black Velvet Gown), Wayne Knight(who is known for his work on Space Jam, The Exes(TV-Series), Seinfeld(TV-Series)), BD Wong(who is known for his work on White Frog, Falling for Grace, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit(TV-Series)) and Samuel L. Jackson(who is known for his work on Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Kingsman: The Secret Service).

Just to get it out there, i have never read the book so i will not know if anything have been changed. This movie is kinda difficult to put into a genre because it has a lot of things going for it. It's a monster movie and an adventure, it's scary at points and so on. The fact that it pulls it off is a real testament to this movie and how good it is. On paper the plot doesn't seem like much but the execution, the effects, the writing and the explanation of how everything works makes this fantastic. The fact that you see actors run form dinosaurs that looks like they are really there is very impressive and it gets your heart pumping. The pacing of the movie is great and it seem like everything the characters do has a reason behind it. They don't just do things to make situations happen. It starts of with the excitement and aww of seeing real dinosaurs and how they make them. They introduce the characters in a good way in the first act so when the action comes we know who's doing what, why they are doing it and we don't need any more information on the characters so we can focus on the action.

This is a fantastic movie. Once or twice i could see that the effects are a little old but that's only if you look for it. Steven Spielberg shows us once again how to tell a story. Also, a lot of monster movies will often try to make their movie around the monsters and kinda forget about their human characters. This movie has no problem with this. This is a movie i would recommend for everyone to see. There is just too many good things with this movie. If you haven't watch it you should watch it. If it's over a year since the last time you saw it, you should see it again. There's only one thing that annoyances me in the movie and that's with Tim and the gun. I won't spoil it but you'll know what i mean when you see it. A fantastic story, great writing, good dialog from well written characters in a movie that brings dinosaurs back to life. Also a great way to tell us that even though we can do something does that mean we should do something. I have not seen the 3D release of this movie but if it comes around again i would pay a lot to see it in 3D. Fantastic.

TL;DR

Fantastic movie, great direction, good written dialog, great characters. You get excited, scared and impressed by this. Great effects. It holds up great for a movie that was released in 1993. I highly recommend everyone to watch this. Runtime 127 minutes.

My question for you:
Does Jurassic World hold up to Jurassic Park?
What do you think of the fact that Jurassic World 2 is coming?
