A 90's sci-fi movie made
by Luc Besson. Best news ever.
Set in the future, a cab
driver becomes the central figure in search for a cosmic weapon to
keep pure evil at bay.
Bruce Willis(known for his
work on The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, Die Hard) plays our cab driver
and retired special forces major Korben Dallas. His life is nothing
special and it looks like he may hate his job to. One day a girl,
Leeloo(played by Milla Jovovich who is known for her work on Stone,
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Resident Evil), comes
crashing through the roof of his cab who asks for his help. He
decides, against his better judgment, to help her. She says that she
is looking for a priest, Vito Cornelius(played by Ian Holm who is
known for his work on Ratatouille, The Lord of the Rings: The
Fellowship of the Ring, Alien). Vito Cornelius learns that the 4
stones needed for the cosmic weapons, that they need right now since
evil has returned, are hidden on a cruise-liner and soon sets off for
it. Before heading there he learns that Korben Dallas had won tickets
for the cruise on the radio so the priest pulls Korben Dallas back
into this again. So now we got some badguy aliens wanting the stones
on the cruise, we got Korben Dallas, we got the Leeloo and the priest
Vito Cornelius. As if that wasn't enough we got another one wanting
the stones. The one controlling the badguy aliens, Emanuel
Zorg(played by Gary Oldman who is known for his work on Leon: The
Professional, The Dark Knight, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). Let
the action begin. Let me start of by saying that all of the cast
delivers solid performances. This might be a weird thing to say but i
think Gary Oldman might be the weakest of them. I don't know if it
was his choice or the character was written like that but he has a
accent that doesn't really work. Luckily you learn a lot about this
character through his actions throughout the movie. Still though,
probably the weakest character and the weakest performance. Don't get
me wrong, it's still a good performance, but not as good as the rest
in this movie. Ian Holms character Vito Cornelius is more of the guy
with all the exposition. He keeps the audience informed about what
they need to know. It can feel forced at some points but it works
well enough. Milla Jovovich is simply delightful in her role. She
plays the girl that is in the middle of this plot. She plays scared
of everything she sees in the world since she haven't seen the world
before, she plays angry when needed and she plays playful when she's
mischievous. A fantastic character played in a fantastic way. Bruce
Willis plays his character of Korben Dallas the same way he is know
to play these kind of action-characters. It's nothing new but he does
what he's suppose to do. Korben Dallas is a good enough character
too. He has a kinda boring existences and you feel he gets into his
element(pun intended) when the bullet starts flying. Good enough
character with a solid performance from Bruce Willis. The vision of
the future from the director(who is known for directing La Femme
Nikita, Leon: The Proffesional, The Family) is also fantastic. One of
my all time favorite futures(the look and feel of the world) in
movies. Great directing through the whole thing.
This is a great movie and
one of the 90's movies you really should watch. It's the classic tale
of good versus evil put in a sci-fi setting. They also have a lot of
great comedy put in this one. The biggest thing that splits audiences
is one very hyper and high-pitched Chris Tucker(who is known for his
work on Rush Hour, Silver Linings Playbook, Jackie Brown) in a
supporting role as Ruby Rhod. Some find him really funny and one of
the great things about this movie while others put him in the same
category as Jar Jar Binks. You also get one hell of a beautiful
concert-scene which is now very famous. It's beautifully shot with
great singing and good editing to a fight-scene in progress. Like
with the Chris Tucker character some people hate this scene but there
are far more who love it, and in my opinion it's a really great
scene. The effects still hold up, the action is exciting and Bruce
Willis is good in his role as the hero who didn't ask for this.
If you want a great sci-fi
action flick from the 90's to watch you can't go wrong with The Fifth
Element. It's a little long with it's run-time of 126 minutes but
it's still well worth the watch. This is the movie that really put
Milla Jovovich on the map in my opinion. This is before she did all
the Resident Evil movies and in this one she actually shows hint of
real acting. Like with most sci-fi movies it has some moments that
might feel a little weird or out of place. This is not a perfect
movie but just let your mind go and enjoy the ride. I recommend it
highly for people who like sci-fi.
TL;DR
A great sci-fi movie, a
great action movie. Good performances all around. Milla Jovovich
delivers a fantastic performance. A little long with a run-time of
126 minutes. This is one of those movies that you think of when you
think of the 90's.
My question for you:
What do you think of this future, is it good or would you like
something a little more gritty?
What did you think of Chris Tuckers character?
