The last movie in the
Cornetto-trilogy and i am so hyped. Can they make a third fantastic
movie?
Five friends reunite to do
a epic pub crawl that they did 20 years earlier and becomes
humankind's only hope for survival.
Simon Pegg(known for his
work on Star Trek, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Shaun of the
Dead) plays Gary King, a middle-aged man who had his best years as a
teenager with his friends. As a grown up he rounds up the old gang to
make a try for The Golden Mile, a pub crawl they tried as teenagers.
Gary King is a really well-written character. So much that you can
probably tell which one of your friends is the Gary King of you
group. He was the King in his teens and made nothing of himself. Nick
Frost plays Andy Knight(played by Nick Frost who is known for his
work on Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Cuban Fury) plays again Simon
Peggs friend here, but they have had some kind of falling out. Now
this was one of the bigger surprises for me in this movie. He doesn't
play one of his regular messy characters, he's more straight-cut. All
business no nonsense kinda guy. Again you get this fantastic
chemistry between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost that's really fun to
watch. With them on the pub crawl is Peter Page(played by Eddie
Marsan who is known for his work on The Illusionist, V for Vendetta,
Sherlock Holms) who's more of a push-over character. We also got
Steven Prince(played by Paddy Considine who is known for his work on
Cinderella Man, The Bourne Ultimatium, Hot Fuzz) who has a little
personal problem with Gary King and in some ways was hes rival in
school. Lastly we got Oliver Chamberlain(played by Martin Freeman who
is known for his work on The Hobbit Trilogy, Ali G InDaHouse,
Sherlock(TV-Show))) who thinks he was some kind of player in school
but is now a business man in a suit. All of these characters are
written in a very good way. They all have their role within the movie
to fill and they all fill it perfectly. After watching some of
director Edgar Wrights(known for directing Shaun of the Dead, Scott
Pilgrim vs. the World, Hot Fuzz) movies this comes like no big
surprise. Underway in the story we also meet Oliver Chamberlains
sister Sam Chamberlain(played by Rosamund Pike who is known for her
work on Jack Reacher, James Bond – Die Another Day, Gone Girl) who
creates some friction in the group. She's also a good character that
help to spice up the movie as it goes on. A very good character to
have in there. She doesn't feel forced into the story in any way.
This is a fantastic end to
the Cornetto-trilogy(the Cornetto-trilogy is the three movies that
Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright has made together, Shaun of
the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. The fact that Simon Pegg,
Nick Frost and Edgar Wright work together and that they eat one of
the flavors of the Cornetto ice-cream in each movie is the only link
between the movies(some supporting cast is used in all three
though)). There is a sci-fi element in this movie that I'm not going
to go into but that shows that they have made a zombie-comedy, a
action-comedy and now a sci-fi-comedy. This movie is more about the
characters and the change from teens to adults and how sometimes some
people refuses to leave their teenage years. It's a really good story
about friendship and the difficulty of growing up and away from
popularity with a good sci-fi plot. I want to mention the
action-scenes in this movie is really good. There are some fistfights
that are choreographed well and there is almost no shaky-cam(I really
dislike the use of shaky-cam). In this movie to we get some
cameos/supporting roles from famous British actors like Bill
Nighy(known for his work on Hot Fuzz, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead
Man's Chest, Love Actually) and Pierce Brosnan(known for his work on
Mamma Mia!, Seraphim Falls, James Bond - Goldeneye). Always fun to
see them in movies. A lot of great actors playing great characters in
a great movie.
If you like comedies or
sci-fis this is a movie for you. It's a fantastic movie all over.
Some might look down on the sci-fi plot and say that it's not very
good. I disagree. I like the sci-fi plot. It's not overly complicated
and it doesn't take from the characters own stories. In my opinion
this movie is maybe not as good as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz but
it's still very good. My advice is to watch the whole trilogy.
TL;DR
Great movie. The trio of
Pegg, Frost and Wright delivers again. Good written characters. Good
plot, great comedy bits. Great supporting cast. If you liked Hot Fuzz
and Shaun of the Dead there's no reason not to give this a chance.
My question for you:
What is your favorite Sci-fi-comedy?
Would you want to see another movie from the trio of Pegg, Frost and
Wright?
