Movie: Shaun of the Dead(2004) – My opinion

My first meeting with this movie was the cover, a man with a cricket-bat and a lots of zombies, color me excited.

A man decides to turn his life around by winning back his ex, fixing his relationship with his mother and dealing with a zombie outbreak.

Simon Pegg(known for his work on Star Trek, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Hot Fuzz) is playing the role of Shaun, a man who's life has stopped in a way. He lives with his friends, he's single and he works a dead-end job. A zombie outbreak happens and Shaun makes a plan with his friend Ed(played by Nick Frost who is known for his work on Hot Fuzz, Paul, Cuban Fury) to get Shauns ex and mother, then go to the pub and wait for everything to blow over. This is my first experience seeing the chemistry between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and it's great. They are fantastic together on the screen. Simon Pegg plays his character just right. You can feel how his character is ok with how his life is but sometimes feel like he should do more with it. Nick Frost plays his character just as good as the friend who don't want to grow up and take responsibility. We really get the feeling that at sometimes he might be holding Shaun back in life, but that's what friends are for, right? This is also the first of three movies that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost work with director Edgar Wright(known for directing Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World's End) who is a genius in my opinion. He really give the movie the feel of a zombie-movie that is much more than just another splatter-fest. A great director with a great vision.

This is one of those weird but fantastic movies that seems like one thing but is so much more. It has some horror, some romance and a lot of comedy. I have heard it been described as a love story set in a zombie-outbreak and when you think about it that really fits the movie. The group Shaun gathers as the movie goes on is filled with different characters who all got well written dialog and their own personalities. You don't feel like anyone of them is there just to get eaten by zombies. You even get a couple of really famous British actors to like Bill Nighy(known for his work on Hot Fuzz, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Love Actually), Dylan Moran(known for his work on Run Fatboy Run, Notting Hill, Black Books(TV-Show)) and Martin Freeman(known for his work on The Hobbit Trilogy, Ali G InDaHouse, Sherlock(TV-Show)). Great performances all around.

If you either like zombie-movies or comedies you should really check this out. It's a fantastic movie and i love it dearly. Sometimes it's a little scary and sometimes it's funny but it always knows what it is. There is also a great amount of references to other movies and so on which i really appreciate. Is there one thing you become sure of as you watch this is that the trio of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright is a winning combination. A must to watch in my opinion.

TL;DR

A fantastic movie directed by a really talented director. A very good cast playing great characters. It's a little horror, a little romantic and a lot of comedy. Worth every minute of the 99 minutes run-time. Simon Pegg is fantastic.

My question for you:
What is your favorite zombie-movie?
What is your favorite movie with Simon Pegg?
