!!!Spoilers!!!
A fantasy movie based on
the novel Stardust written by Neil Gaiman, this is going to be
awesome. This may be one of the most overlook movies ever in my
opinion.
A young man promises his
crush that he'll retrieve a fallen star for her by venturing into a
magical realm.
Just a warning, this is
once again an opinion on one of my favorite movies and just so you
know, this movie is great. I have not read the novel by Neil Gaiman
so i can't say how well it holds up against the novel but that's ok
since this about just the movie, not where it came from. The director
was picked by Neil Gaiman though so it got that going for it. The
director(known for directing Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman:
The Secret Service) had not directed a lot of movies at the time this
came around but i can't think about anyone that could have done this
better. He has also shown later with great movies like Kingsman: The
Secret Service that Stardust was not a fluke, he's a very very good
director.
Our main character is
Tristan Thorn(played by Charlie Cox who is known for his work on The
Theory of Everything, Daredevil(TV-Series)) who has a character that
has real growth. We meet him while he is doing all he can for a girl
that doesn't want him. We all have probably been in that position
where you do anything you can to get someone too understand the
she/he should be with you. This makes him really relatable.
Throughout the movie he learns what love really is and understands
that his crush might not be the one for him. He goes on a fantastic
journey filled with excitement, witches, princes and magic. He's all
over a great character. On his quest for the fallen star he has
promised his crush he meet Yvaine(played by Claire Danes who is known
for her work on Romeo + Juliet, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,
Homeland(TV-Series)). Relatively early in the movie we learn that
Yvaine was the fallen star Tristan was looking for. At the start she
is kind off nagging and annoying and it's explained by the fact that
she was just bounced out of the sky, and that she usually sleeps all
day because she needs to shine at night. She is still kinda annoying
but she has a reason for being it at least. She also evolves as the
movie goes along. She learns more of people and she also learn
Tristan a thing or two about what love really is. She also looks
stunning in this movie. Like absurdly beautiful. You really think she
could have been a fallen star. Good job to the actor and all that
helped her shine. Also, she is another strong character. We also meet
Septimus(played by Mark Strong who is known for his work on Kingsman:
The Secret Service, Sherlock Holmes, The Imitation Game), the seventh
son of the king who is hunting for a gem that will show him as the
next king and give him the throne. The gem is the thing that crashed
with Yvaine in the sky so she fell down. This also means that she is
the one that has the gem then. He soon learns that they(Yvaine and
Tristan) have the gem and also that she is a star. He want the gem,
obviously, and he wants the stars heart because with that he can live
forever. This character is very driven. He will do anything to become
the king. He is still not the most dangerous character hunting for
the star. Lamia(played by Michelle Pfeiffer who is known for her work
on Hairspray, Scarface, Batman Returns) is a very strong witch wants
the stars heart too, to get more power and to get young again. This
character might be my favorite in the movie. She is really scary. Her
powers are extremely powerful and she has two witches she lives with
so there is three of them. Michelle Pfeiffer plays her brilliantly
and scary, and sometimes funny. It's really great to see. Last one i
want to mention is Captain Shakespeare(played by Robert De Niro who
is known for his work on Ronin, Goodfellas, The Deer Hunter) who runs
a lightning collector air ship. This helps us establish the world a
little more with the fact that you can harvest lightning and that
it's not allowed. De Niro is always fantastic to see onscreen and
this captain is not what you expect. It is truly glorious. He also
helps Tristan to become a swordsman, and to know that what he wants
might be closer than he think. A truly great character.
This is a love story at
heart, so if you really hate love stories then this is not for you. I
have nothing against it, especially when it is well made like this.
The fantasy aspect of this movie is great, with magic and witches and
fallen stars and so on. The greatest thing with this movie is that it
found the perfect middle-ground between fantasy, scary and comedy.
There is some really great comedy bits in there. The seven princes
are great for comedy. Believe me on that. The music and effects are
also top notch. If you go on spotify and find the soundtrack from the
movie you can kinda feel the adventure and fantasy in the music. This
movie will show you the adventure of a boy trying to find a gift for
a crush and instead he becomes a man and learns about life and love.
It's just fantastic. A scene i want to really highlight is a spoiler,
so spoiler-warning. The seventh prince dies and the witch uses his
body to sword-fight with Tristan via voodoo. Very impressive scene
because the seventh sons head is all over the place and his limbs
kinda flies all over the place because he's dead. It's just a
fantastic scene. So, in closing, this is one of the best fantasy love
story's ever. You really feel you can relate to the characters,
something that can be kinda hard in fantasy movies sometimes. A great
and beautiful movie.
TL;DR
Great movie. A fantasy
love story that keeps your attention from start to finish. Great
characters, great character development. Fantastic villain. Fantastic
music and effects. A great story about learning to know your feelings
and learning that what you got in front of you may not be the best
choice. If you don't know what to watch you can never go wrong with
putting on Stardust.
My question for you:
What's
your favorite fantasy movie?
What
old fantasy-movie do you feel like they need to remake?
