So this is it, the
Battlefield game no one asked for. The first time i saw Battlefield
Hardline I really wasn't impressed with it. It looked like something
that should be a DLC(and I'm not the first one saying that). Also,
this is not developed by DICE(developer of Battlefield: Bad Company
2, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4), it's developed by
Visceral(developer of the Dead Space series and Army of Two: The
Devil's Cartel). So to recap we got a game no one asked for that
looks like a DLC and is developed by another studio than made the
other Battlefield games. Oh damn.
The story is set in Miami
during a drug war where you play as detective Nick Mendoza(played by
Nicholas Gonzalez who is known for his work on True Blood and Behind
Enemy Lines 2). You and your partner follow the drug-trail and you
soon realize corruption can affect both sides of the law. The last
time there were cops looking for a lot of drugs in Miami we got Bad
Boys 2, just saying. Nick Mendoza as a character is ok. He's not a
bad character but he could also be better in some ways. Having said
there are some interesting characters too, like your boss Julian
Dawes(played by Benito Martinez who is known for his work on Sons of
Anarchy and House of Cards) and your partner, Khai Minh Dao(played by
Kelly Hu who is known for her work on X-Men 2, The Scorpion King and
Cradle 2 the Grave). You also meet a colleague, Carl Stoddard(played
by Travis Willingham who is know for his work on Far Cry 4 and Metal
Gear Rising: Revengeance) who is a total badass but you never get a
good feel on where his loyalties are. There are more good characters
in there but i feel like you get the my point, and all of them have
good voiceacting.
So, right of the bat when
I start the game is a loading screen that yells «woop woop it's the
sound of the Police» and I'm instantly pumped and ready for action,
and action was what i got. Sadly that firefight was really short and
then the game slowed the pace way down. I had a couple game crashes
and some long loading-screens but the loading-screens are just there
and survivable and the crashes are probably patched and fixed by now.
Probably nothing to worry about. They have this TV-show feel on the
game so every time you quit the game there comes a small scene that
says «Next time on Hardline» and shows a little of the action to
come, with no spoilers of course. The same happens when you continue
your game but they say «previously on Hardline» and you get a
little recap on what has happened. This i like. You really get that
TV-show feeling they are going for and you won't forget what happened
last time you played. I also really like the cops and criminals
theme, it works better for me than the military theme(it may be
because I have played so many military shooters the last couple of
years). There are also some possibilities to be stealthily which is a
nice and kinda surprising thing to have in a game like Battlefield.
Using the stealth-possibilities you can sneak up on criminals and
arrest them which will reward you more than just shooting everyone.
There are also some extra objectives to do for more rewards, these
are objectives like collecting evidence an arresting specific
criminals. The story of the game starts of good but it looses it's
momentum halfway through. There is some good writing and some great
action-pieces but the story just turns into something i didn't like,
but it's still better than the story in Battlefield 3 and way better
than the story in Battlefield 4. Oh yeah, I really hated the ending,
i won't spoil it anymore then saying that I hated it. After playing
for 7 hours and 30 minutes I was hoping for something better then
what i got. Unless you really like playing single-player campaigns
you won't miss anything by not playing this, just go right for the
multiplayer. Speaking of that, multiplayer, here i come.
TL;DR
Get that TV-show feeling.
Good characters with great actors playing them. Good start but looses
steam underway. Some good action-pieces. Stealth-possibilities are
good. Extra objectives are always good to have. I used 7 hours and 30
minutes to complete it. My advice is if you don't really love to play
single-player just jump into the multiplayer.
My question for you:
Do
you play the campaign in these type of games?(Call of duty,
Battlefield, Medal of Honor)?
Do
you think they should stop making single player campaign to these
type of games and just focus on multiplayer?
