EA have some of the most
anticipated titles on the way. Hopefully they show us what we really
want.
They start of with a very
short cinematic trailer of the new Mass Effect game. That sounds
great but in my opinion it's not. First off, it's a cinematic
trailer. I want to see gameplay so i can see how the looks in-game.
What is new, what is still there and so on. Secondly we knew that a
new Mass Effect was coming so this was reduced to a glorified
namedrop. The name, Mass Effect Andromeda, sounds cool enough though.
What this might mean is that we get to see more when Gamescom comes
around. If they don't have anything for Gamescom i feel like they
shouldn't have showed us anything. I don't want hype for a game if it
doesn't come for like 2 years. Show us gameplay when you got. Kinda
lackluster start to the conference.
Next up we got to see the
new Need for Speed simply called Need for Speed. There isn't much to
say about this. It looks great and it looks like it's still an arcade
racer. I personally love the Need for Speed series since I'm not huge
on car simulators. We got to see some gameplay and as i said, it
looks great. Nothing to go crazy about but it's nice to know that
they are still making Need for Speed.
After that they showed us
a good cinematic trailer for Star Wars The Old Republic: Knights of
the Fallen Empire, an expansion for their MMORPG. I know i said we
didn't want cinematics, we wanted gameplay but the only exception is
for an MMORPG. The reason for that is that watching an MMORPG played
is really boring. Anyway, it's really cool that they keep supporting
Star Wars The Old Republic. I'm really excited to see this expansion
and to see how their player numbers will react when it comes out. The
trailer kinda got me excited to play an MMORPG again.
Next up we got a look at
Unravel. The first thing i thought when i saw this was that it was
their answer to Nintendos Yoshi's Woolly World but a little darker.
After watching their gamplay trailer for a moment i realized that it
was a little different. As i said it's darker and it does have a very
interesting art style. It's not something that makes me go crazy with
joy but i will keep an eye on this one, it might turn into something
special.
After that they showed off
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. I already talked about this
game in my opinion of Microsofts conference and what i said there
still applies so read it there if you are wondering what i mean about
this one.
Now we are moving towards
the sports-games. EA have always had a lot of the sports-games so
this had to be there and they start off with NHL16. What can i say,
it's Ice Hockey. It looks beautiful though.
Keeping with the sports we
got to see NBA LIVE 16 next. Again, what can i say, it's Basketball
and it looks great.
After that we got to hear
about what they had for the mobile market. I must admit that i really
don't care about my phone as a platform and i did not really pay
attention.
And after that they showed
us Minions Paradise. This is another mobile game that's based on the
characters who appeared in Despicable Me. It looks like a mobile game
and it looked like it played like a mobile game. Again, not my cup of
tea.
Next up we got to see a
video of Pelé and that means we are going to have a look at Fifa16.
What happened next was that they got Pelé to come out on stage and
have a kind of interview. I don't get why companies do this. Like
yeah, it's cool to see him and all that but this is a show for
gaming-press and gamers who wants to see what is coming for their
consoles and PC's. What games are looking like and what they have
done of tech and graphics. I don't feel like this is the place to
have this kind of segment. Fifa looks great though.
Next up is one of my most
anticipated games, Mirror's Edge Catalyst and it looks fantastic.
Some people are saying that it looks too much like the first Mirror's
Edge but is that really bad? If you boot up Mirror's Edge today it
still looks really good. So bright and beautiful. We got some
gameplay and it looks really fluid and in a game like this that's
really important. I'm very happy about how it looks. My only complain
is that they said that Faith, the main character, can't use guns
anymore. I rarely used them in the first game but it's more about
that i want the option. It could help you out of tight spots and so
on. I think it's a bad idea to remove things like that from games
when their predecessor had it. Other than that it looks fantastic.
And we are still not done
with sports. Now over to Madden NFL 16. I'm not huge on sports-games,
also I'm from Europe so American Football is really not that
interesting. Maybe if it was Blitz: The League or something like
that. Anyway, Madden is still Madden.
Now, the moment is finally
here. They are showing us what Star Wars Battlefront looks like now.
I have played the other Star Wars Battlefront games and i loved them.
I was a little nervous since it has the core mechanics of Battlefield
and the Battlefield series has not had the best treatment over the
years. I'm really happy that they showed us gameplay footage. That
was really what they needed. A cinematic would not have been enough.
They showed us a battle on the planet Hoth(if you don't know about
Hoth you should watch Star Wars) and it looked really great in my
opinion. There is a lot more than just a pretty level to make a good
game but this is a great start. I'm really pleased with how it looks.
They have said that we get 12 maps at launch and that online
multiplayer supports up to 40 players. Let's just hope that their net
code is up to speed this time.
So that's EA at E3. I
still don't like the focus on sports-games. I understand that they
must have their presence there but we all know what a Fifa game is
and looks like. I don't think we need so much talking about it. The
same goes for all the sports games. Also, i felt that the segment
with Pelé was unnecessary and too long. Stick to the games and tech
please. The Mass Effect Andromeda thing felt a little rushed, like
they felt that they had to show it whatever state it was in. What
saved it for me was Mirror's Edge, the trailer for Star Wars The Old
Republic and Star Wars Battlefront. Still a pretty weak conference in
my opinion.
