This is my list of top
games in 2014. You will probably feel like some games are missing and
that is probably because i just haven't played them(Like Dragon Age:
Inquisition) or i didn't like them. It's my list so it's my choice.
Anyway, here are my top games of 2014.
9. Titanfall
When
we first saw Titanfall it looked great. Fast running action and hard
mech action. Dropping in your first titan was a great feeling and
this is one of the reasons this game is on my list. Everything you
did had a great feel to it. Battles look a lot more busy than they
really are too, because of Respawns decision to have AI soldiers in
the battle. What really drops this game down to spot 9 is how fast it
got old and the so called campaign. The campaign was just maps from
multiplayer with kind of a voice-over that told the story and why you
were doing things. That and the fact that after 2 months of playing
you didn't feel like going in-game anymore is the reason for the
number 9 spot. Fun but only for a short while.
8. Double Dragon Neon
This game is kind of
cheating to put on the list because it had its release in 2012, but i
decided that it is ok since it came out for PC in 2014 and that's
where i played it. I have to say, I'm a sucker for games like this.
The nostalgia is strong with this one. I still remember playing the
first Double dragon on my NES and this took me right back. Yes it
looks kinda different and is a lot smoother but you still fight dudes
that got your girlfriend. You also collect cassettes for moves and
abilities which also feels like a good retro. The end is also
fantastic(Don't want to spoil it but you who have completed the game
knows what i mean). A solid sidescroller.
7. Depth
Depth
was one of those games that came out of nowhere for me. I had heard
the name but didn't know what it was or who made it. So it is pvp,
you either play as one of four divers or you play as one of two
sharks. Sharks kill players, players try to survive. Sounds kinda
mediocre maybe but i loved it. I don't know how it is to play alone
but with friends it is great fun. Also, it is not like some kind of
deathmatch. Divers tries to secure loot while the shark is stopping
us. Getting loot means buy better items like guns or sonar plus more.
There are six levels as i recall and they all have something
different about them. One is in a mine with tight corners and one is
in very murky waters. What this game really wins on is how easy it is
to pick up and play and the atmosphere. You are genuinely nervous for
the sharks. I love it.
6. Wolfenstein: The New
Order
Wolfenstein is FPS. This
game, even though am not to happy about the story, has some of the
coolest FPS levels in recent memory. You can dual-wield most weapons
and go full Arnold on all enemies. There are also some fantastic
characters in this game. If you have played it you probably remember
someone you meet on a train. A fantastic scene. So, even if i don't
like the story this game still deserves a spot for it's fantastic
action elements and characters.
5. Banished
Another one of those games
that just came out of nowhere. This game is all about making your
little town grow and survive. You start with very little and have to
tell people to build, hunt and chop. Got no wood for the winter and
your town has frozen to death. No food and they starve. You really
have to think about everything and that is what i like about it. You
got no one to blame but yourself if you lose your people. And what do
you do if one dies, who can take his job and what job is it ok to
take one guy from. The fact that only one guy made this game is also
very impressing.
4. Transistor
Supergiant games is back
and again they hit the mark. Transistor is a beautiful game with
fantastic music. The combat-system has a frozen planning mode that
gives it a little more tactical feel and it works fantastic. I don't
know what more to say, beautiful game, fantastic music and great
combat. Brilliant game.
3. Middle-earth: Shadow
of Mordor
A new game set in Tolkiens
world. A lot of people were nervous when thinking of another game in
Tolkien's world because games in that world has not always been so
good. Have no fear, Shadow of Mordor is good. It's damn good. The
game takes place between The hobbit and The lord of the rings, and
you play as Talion, a ranger captain of Gondor, out for revenge. The
game borrows from other games but it still feel's like a different
game than who they borrow from. The only thing i feel like is bad
with this game is the fact that you are too powerful too early in the
game, but when the orcheads start too fly you really don't care.
There is a lot of side-missions to do and you also meet some familiar
faces. An extremely solid game with great feel and you are a total
badass.
2. Metal Gear Rising:
Revengeance
Another game that is kinda
cheating to have on this list. It came out in 2013 but came out on PC
in 2014 so i say it's ok. Oh this game, this game is fantastic. I
love it to bits. You play as Raiden, who is now a cyborg and very
skilled with his sword. A sword you use with great efficiency. You
have a free slicing mode that let's you aim your slicing. If you
start cutting an enemy soldier to pieces you also get a counter of
how many pieces you have cut him into. I don't know why i need to
know that but i feel like i really needed to know that. What really
shines in this game, in my opinion, is the boss fights. They kinda
feel like Metal Gear bosses but what i love is the music. When you
fight a boss you first hear the metal music in the background. Then,
when the boss jumps into the next phase you hear a little more of the
metal music, and in the final phase of the boss fight they put on the
lyrics in the song, and they are all kinda good. They match the
fights perfectly and some of them get stuck on your mind. It is
glorious. Fantastic hack and slash.
1. South Park: The
Stick of Truth
This
is kind of a weird one because I am not a fan of the TV-show. This
game on the other hand is fantastic. Simply brilliant. First of, you
play as a new kid which means that you meet all the familiar faces
you know and love/hate. It is also an RPG so it makes sense that you
get to play as a new one so you can play your role. A lot of nice
loot an equipment, talents, perks, classes and more, this game got
all the thing an RPG needs. Also, surprisingly, the story is good.
Another thing that they did great is that everyone and everything
moves just like in the show. I am very impressed with what they made
here. It's fun, kinda offensive, weird and brilliant. An easy number
1 for me.
